Alaska has a wide range of educational opportunities for residents and non-residents alike. Educational opportunities exist for K-12, College, University, Trade, and Outdoor programs. Many of the schools in Alaska offer summer only programs in addition to the September - June school year. Financial aid is available to most students in the form of grants, loans, and scholarships. Some programs fill quickly and others normally have room for late arrivals. Alaska offers many educational programs, but training for some advanced and specialized degrees aren't available in state as well as some trade schools programs.
K - 12 Programs: - The State of Alaska provides education for grades K -12 free of charge. All of the 53 school districts in the state receive significant funding. In some communities with now property tax base the state funds the entire cost of education and offer reduced amounts to the more developed areas. In addition several private and charter schools are available in different communities throughout the state.
Trade Schools: - The primary trainer for trade related occupations is the State of Alaska. Whether it be through the State University and College system or the the Alaska Vocational Training Center (AVTEC). Several of the local union organizations offer apprenticeship programs for carpenters and equipment operators.
Outdoor Schools: - Several schools in Alaska offer outdoor education. Ranging from glacier travel to extreme mountaineering. Schools typically operate during the summer months with some courses offered during spring and fall. The largest in NOLS with a facility in Palmer, Alaska. AMS located in Talkeetna specializes in mountaineering.
University of Alaska: - State of Alaska university systems. Main campus locations in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau. Satellite campuses throughout Alaska. Programs offered are similar to most state university programs. Fairbanks is the largest of the three campus system offering the more advanced and technical degree programs. Anchorage and Juneau offer slightly different curriculums.

AMS - Alaska Mountaineering School - Located in Talkeetna, Alaska next
to Denali National Park & Preserve. AMS teaches instructional courses and leads guided climbs throughout the Alaska Range, Talkeetna Mountains, and Chugach Mountains.Alaska Pacific University - A is a small liberal arts college located in Anchorage, Alaska, emphasizing experiential learning. The university is a member of the Eco League, a group of six small universities and colleges with strong programs in environmental studies and related topics.
AVTEC - State of Alaska technical school offering programs in culinary, health, IT, and maritime fields.
Kenai Fishing Academy - Campus in Soldatna Alaska. School teaches fishing in the heart of Alaska's prime fishing.
NOLS - National Outdoor Leadership School - Outdoor school offering college credit classes in outdoor skills. In Alaska they offer backpacking, glacier travel, sea kayaking, and mountaineering.
